Social media may be everlasting, but if you don’t want a typo or regrettable statement to remain online, you can choose not to post it.

You can delete comments you’ve left on other people’s Instagram posts as well as comments others have left on your own posts. You can also choose to restrict specific persons from leaving comments on your posts or hide specific categories of remarks.

Here’s the complete process.

How to delete a comment on Instagram that someone else wrote on one of your posts

1. Open the Instagram app on your iPhone or Android and login to your account.

2. Tap your profile icon in the bottom-right corner of the app to go to your profile.

3. Find and select the post you want to delete a comment on.

4. Tap on one of the comments on your post, then on the Comments summary page, tap the icon of three horizontal dots in the top-right corner.

5. In the pop-up, select Manage Comments.

6. A circle will appear next to each comment — tap the circle next to the comment(s) you want to delete, making a checkmark appear. Then, tap Delete at the bottom-left of the page.

7. Choose Delete Comment in the pop-up, and the comment will be immediately deleted.

Quick tip: You may also swipe to the left on the remark you wish to delete and hit the red trash can button that appears to do so from the Comments summary page.

How to hide comments on your Instagram posts

Here are some settings you may use on Instagram to block certain types of comments or remarks from particular users.

1. Open the Instagram app on your iPhone or Android and login to your account.

2. Tap your profile icon in the bottom-right corner of the app to go to your profile.

3. Tap the icon of three horizontal lines in the top-right corner of your profile page.

4. In the pop-up, select Settings.

5. On the Settings page, select Privacy.

6. On the Privacy page, tap Comments.

7. There are a few ways you can choose to hide comments on the Comment Controls page. In the Filters section, swipe the button beside hiding Offensive Comments to hide all comments that Instagram deems inappropriate, such as offensive, bullying, or spam comments. You can also swipe the button beside hiding More Comments to add an extra filter on potentially inappropriate comments.

You can also put particular words or phrases in the textbox that appears to hide comments that contain those words or phrases by swiping the button next to Manual Filter. The feature is activated while the button is blue, and it is disabled when the button is grey.

8. If you want to hide block comments from specific users, tap Block Comments From at the top of the Comment Controls page. Use the search bar on the next screen to enter a user you want to block comments from.

Tap Block next to the user’s name when you’ve located them. Only their comments on your posts will be blocked, not the entirety of their profile. When you block someone’s remarks, only they will be able to see them, and they won’t be aware that you have done so.

You’ll see a View Hidden Comments link beneath your post if Instagram has hidden a comment, either because it was deemed objectionable or it was from a commenter who has been blocked. To see a hidden remark, tap Unhide next to it. There are no comments that Instagram has hidden if the View Hidden Comments link is not there.
