The significance of the National Defence Council is underlined by the act that the President is its chairman.
The other membem of the National Defence Council are the vice President who is vice Chairman, the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, the Chief of Naval Staff and the Chief of Air Staff.
The Constitution also empowers the President to appoint a few other people to serve on the council.
The National Defence Council has been in existence since 1979 and it advises the President on matters relating to the defence of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.
