In this article, we’ll show you how to unfollow Twitter users and stop them from following you. Both the iOS and Android Twitter apps as well as Twitter accessed through a web browser must follow the instructions.

How to Remove Twitter Followers

In an October 2021 update, Twitter made it simpler to unfollow users without blocking them. A workaround that required blocking and swiftly unblocking the follower in question had to be used in the past.

Only the web version of Twitter can use this new removal feature. Users of Android and iOS can still unfollow users using the “soft block” workaround.

  1. Open the Twitter app in a browser such as Edge, Brave, Firefox, or Chrome. Any internet browser is fine.

  2. Go to the account of the person you wish to remove.

  3. Select More (the three horizontal dots).

  4. Select Remove this follower.

How to ‘Soft Block’ Followers on iOS and Android

You must employ a workaround known as a “soft block” if you wish to unfollow someone on Twitter while using a mobile device. To force someone to unfollow you, you must first block them and then swiftly unblock them. This is how you do it:

  1. Open the navigation menu and select your profile picture.

  2. Select Followers. Go through your list and manually block, then unblock each account you don’t want following you.

  3. From your Followers list, select an account to go to that person’s profile.

  4. Select the three ellipsis icon in the upper-right corner.

  5. Select Block.

  6. Select Block on the confirmation screen.

  7. Tap Unblock. The account is now unblocked, but the person is no longer following you.

By blocking a user’s account, you restrict them from following you and from viewing their stuff. When an account is blocked, its content is once more visible, and the initial block’s unfollow action is still in effect. The affected accounts only notice that they have unfollowed you. For a few seconds, they won’t be aware that they were blocked.

How to Protect Your Tweets

Nothing prevents a follower from returning after you unfollow them. However, if you protect your tweets, each new follower request must be approved. This is how:

  1. If you’re using Windows 10 or the web version of Twitter, select More on the side menu. If you’re on Android or iOS, skip to the next step.

  2. Select Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety.

  3. Turn on Protect your Tweets. On the web version, select Protect your Tweets and then confirm by selecting Protect. This makes your Twitter account private and requires that you manually approve every future follower before they can see your content.

Since none of your tweets are accessible to the general public, turning your Twitter account private is not advised if you’re attempting to establish your brand or advertise a service or product.
