Change Your Relationship Status on the Facebook Website

To update your relationship status on the Facebook website:

  1. Select your profile image in the upper-right area of the screen.

  2. Select Edit Profile.

  3. Scroll down and select Edit next to Customize Your Intro.

  4. Scroll down and select the pencil icon next to Relationship.

  5. Select the pencil icon next to your relationship status.

  6. Select the down arrow next to your relationship status to choose a new status.

Choices are:

  • Single
  • In a relationship
  • Engaged
  • Married
  • In a civil union
  • In a domestic partnership
  • In an open relationship
  • It’s complicated
  • Separated
  • Divorced
  • Widowed

7. If you selected a relationship status that involves another person, you have the option to enter their name in the box below your relationship status.

Your partner will be notified that you have added them to your relationship status. Until they approve, “Pending” will display next to your relationship status.

8. You can also enter your anniversary date next to Since.

9. To change your relationship’s privacy setting, click your current privacy setting, and choose a new one. If you select the globe icon, your relationship status will be public. The couple icon makes it viewable to your friends only.

10. Select Save.

Change Your Relationship Status in the Facebook App

To update your relationship status in the Facebook app:

  1. Tap your profile image in the upper-left corner.

  2. Tap the three dots next to Add Story > Edit Profile.

  3. Scroll down and tap your current relationship status.

  4. Scroll down and select the pencil icon next to Relationship.

  5. Select the down arrow next to your relationship status to choose a new status, and then tap Done.

  • Engaged
  • Married

  • In an open relationship

  • Divorced

6. If you selected a relationship status that involves another person, you can enter their name in the box below your relationship status. Your partner will be notified that you have added them. Until your partner approves the addition of their name, you will see “Pending” next to your relationship status.

7. If you selected a relationship status that involves another person, you have the option to enter your Anniversary date.

8. To change your relationship’s privacy setting, click your current privacy setting, and choose a new one. The globe icon makes your relationship status public. The couple icon makes your relationship status viewable to your friends only.

9. Tap Save.

Make your relationship status private before updating it on Facebook to avoid attention following a divorce or becoming single.
